Who is the stylists of famous rappers ?
Hip-hop artists are storytellers and reporters of our time, and since hip-hop has become the number one music genre, hip-hop artists clearly control culture.
Aggressive, flaunted masculinity, a cult of wealth and "coolness" - all this was an integral part of hip-hop until the late nineties. The stylistic codes formed by the subculture are still traced, however, two decades ago, their personal stylists began to exert a strong influence on the style of rappers, who introduced a trend to branded and emphasized fashionable clothes and experimental (and therefore memorable) images in music videos.
It all started with June Ambrose, the stylist in charge of Missy Elliott’s famous vinyl outfit in The Rain, and Pi Diddy and Mase in Feel So Good, where they appeared in silver foil jackets. In 1999, Ambrose began collaborating with Jay-Z - it was she who dressed the rapper from dark suits to bright ones, helped him to accept the wider framework of the “permissible” in everyday clothes, and contributed to the transformation of the style as a whole.
Harlem tailor and designer Dapper Dan, started out with fake Gucci, Fendi, Louis Vuitton items that were popular with hip-hop artists of the eighties and nineties. “Previously, luxury stores did not treat black people with the dignity that I think they deserve,” he later said in an interview with The New York Times, implying not only himself, but also those for whom he sewed clothes - Big Daddy Kane, Rakim, Salt-N-Pepa and others. Only recently, Gucci signed a contract with the designer, recognizing his merits in the field of popularizing the brand.
Rappers continue to work with image makers, although they read the opposite. Star stylist Zoe Dupree has been working with Young Thug for several years, picking out images from the items of Burberry, Fendi and Alexander McQueen. Zoe Costello dresses the Migos trio so that the participants look cool, both on their own and together. Kyle Louu is responsible for the images of Travis Scott, thanks to whom he became a red carpet star and received a contract with Saint Laurent.
A$AP Rocky continues to collaborate with stylist Matthew Henson, although he released a song called “Shoot Your Stylist”. Now the rapper has become a trendsetter thanks to his image in a scarf, he is an invited guest of shows at the Paris Fashion Week, where he comes in wide jeans and a woven bag - that is, he is rightly considered an icon of style.
Garcia Dianne, the stylist of Kendrick Lamar, says that when an artist gives out new music, you get content that you work with. You hear a song, you can catch her mood. People want to look at something and associate it with music. At the same time, they want to be inspired to become someone new, and I think that fashion allows you to do this. "
The relations of rappers and fashion were built gradually - through stylists as a connecting link. Now, musicians from marginals in the eyes of luxury companies have turned into their ambassadors: for example, Gucci Mane has become the face of the Gucci campaign, and musicians like Cardi B and A$AP Rocky are sitting on the front row of fashion shows along with the chief editors of gloss.
