This is how Birkenstocks became essential in summer
The normcore aesthetic has taken over fashion, so Birkenstocks have definitely become a cool accessory contended and interpreted by different fashion houses. Fashionistas no longer wear only high heels, red soles and crystal spikes but prefer to sport some iconic models of the well-known German brand in summer. Comfort first even if you parade in Milan or Paris, or if you have a "front row" invitation.

It is a fact that the brand created in 1774 by Johann Birkenstock today is appreciated by the luxury world so much that different maisons compete to give their creative vision: we remember Valentino, Jil Sander, Proenza Schouler, Manolo Blahnik. The latest reimagining appeared on Dior's men's runway and is now available online: together they re-imagined the Tokio sabots and Milano sandals for the 1947 CD capsule, which pays homage to Monsieur Dior's passion for gardening, combining elegance and functionality.

But it was not always so, we had to wait for the comfy revolution to turn them into cult objects, without seasonality or gender. It can be said that Birkenstock has struggled to make its mark in fashion without distorting its image or abandoning the iconic footbed: today it can be said that they are among the most worn summer shoes. After critical acclaim, they have even made it to the feet of models and influencers, definitely becoming a cool accessory without "ifs" or "buts."
The secret to wearing them is one and it is absolutely easy to follow: avoid Pindaric flights of style, between exaggerated volumes and bold patterns, to definitely embrace the normcore aesthetic, made of essentials. Yes, even with jeans and a tank top you will look perfect in your new Birkenstocks.

Birkenstock slides: Arizona and Madrid
The most popular model is the one with a double strap and closed with a metal buckle, namely the Arizona sandals. For those who want to slender the figure, Birkenstock also proposed the version with single and christened under the name Madrid. In both cases these are a pair of slides, beloved by the fashion system so much so that they are interpreted in almost every limited edition drop.
Recently they were worn by Marion Cotillard with a pair of skinny jeans and a vest worn as a top, all total black. But she's not the only one: Kendall Jenner goes for the basic, staying true to the normcore style, so the Arizona sandals look great with frayed denim shorts and a tank top.

Closed-toe Birkenstocks, aka the Boston sabots.
Rustic and a bit rural, these sabots have marked entire generations of gardeners and botanical enthusiasts, wearing them as a comfortable and viable alternative to clogs. Lighter and more ergonomic, even Kanye West wore them to be pictured on the cover of GQ. So what was considered "anti-fashion" becomes totally cool.
In fact, they are a closed alternative to classic models: to be worn in winter with a pair of socks or for walking on the damp, freshly wet grass. But what are the most suitable pairings? The fashion tip already shared, to go for the essentials, remains valid: try wearing Boston sabots with loose pants, a cool men's shirt or a maxi blazer. But don't give up on completing the looks either with a mini skirt, the star item of summer outfits in 2022, or pair it with the most comfy fashion combo, which is jeans and t-shirt. A viable alternative to sneakers, as well as a revenge if you think only a decade ago...!
