MET GALA 2021 : How was the American Fashion theme explored?
September 13 was an eventful night, the biggest one this year! As always, designers were not afraid to get outside the box and serve us with incredible looks. Here is a list of some of the best dressed honoring American Fashion.
SIMONE BILES by Area x Athleta
The Olympic winner, wore a swarovski crystal-embellished skirt, a mini dress underneath and a knitted night sky-inspired bodysuit. The 3 in 1 outfit weighted 88 pounds and took about 6,650 hours and 100 workers to get it done. The meaning behind the outfit was to pay tribute to gymnasts and to focus on “the intersection where performance, strength, and beauty meet.”
LUPITA NYONG’O by Versace
Denim and beaded details, a match you didn’t think worked.
On top of that, a beautiful work of art hairstyle, inspired by Brooklyn based conceptual artist Lorna Simpson. All the details of this look show America!
CIARA by Dundas
The singer stepped on the red carpet in a football inspired dress, in honor of her husband and NFL player, Russell Wilson. The dress was designed by Peter Dundas and inspired by Geoffrey Beene’s jersey dresses from the late 1960s. Both the lime green color and the jersey number show Ciara’s support to her husband and his NFL team. She also accessorized it by wearing Wilson’s Super Bowl ring!
IMAN by Harris Reed in collaboration with D&G
Many commented that this is the winner of tonight’s event. “Inspired by ballroom culture of America’s golden age”, Iman stepped out in a custom golden jumpsuit and a feather embellished metallic overskirt with a matching headpiece.
KAIA GERBER by Oscar de la Renta
Oscar de la Renta, the winner of every Met Gala!
In reference to Bianca Jagger’s Dior look in 1981, Kaia Gerber wore a very similar look: dress, hair and makeup. Simple yet elegant and on theme!
JLO by Ralph Lauren
Jennifer Lopez wore a western inspired dress and accessories but with a dramatic twist by one of the most important designers of American fashion: plunging neckline and a high slit dress accessorized with a cowboy hat, a fur jacket and a holster belt.
KENDALL JENNER by Givenchy
An homage to Hollywood classics, the model wore a transparent dress made of crystals and stars. This look has some resemblance to the one Audrey Hepburn wore by Cecil Beaton in the movie My Fair Lady: from the neck piece, the shoulder pads and the crystal embellishments.
