The period from 1942 to 1945 greatly influenced the dresses for the ceremony.  Many of the outfits were mostly black.

In the postwar years, following French fashion, actresses chose dresses with an emphasis on the waist and puffy skirts in the style of Christian Dior couturier. Audrey Hepburn wore the outfits of couturier Givenchy, and Grace Kelly put on a satin dress created by designer Edith Head for the ceremony in 1955.
