7 trends that New York fashion people are sure to wear this fall
Regardless of what one thinks of New York, there is no denying the influence it has on setting trends. Whenever I attend New York Fashion Week, the outfits I see on the street style set are often the ones that reach the masses on social media a few months later. Even during my daily commute, I end up being inspired by the people I pass on the street or on the subway platform. Since you may want to plan ahead for your fall wardrobe, I took a look at the fall trends my favorite New Yorkers have been wearing. We've seen a wide variety of garments hit the runways, but only a fraction of them end up making it to the streets.
Let me assure you that I am not biased when I say that the selection below is surprisingly good. The main themes to keep in mind? Elegant details, early 80s ties and maxi hemlines. Even if you don't live near the city, you can still take a tour. And with that, continue to discover the seven trends that all of New York's coolest people will be sporting this fall.

Maxi skirts
Maxi skirts have grown exponentially, and their speed doesn't stop with fall. Inspired by the early 1990s, the longer hemline will be offered in sleek, minimal silhouettes.

Ballet flats
For some, ballet flats have been a wardrobe staple that has never left our closets. If it's been a while since you've picked out a pair, it's time to take a look at this beautiful trend.

Oversized bags
Being a commuter, small bags have never been my thing. Now the opposite style has become ubiquitous. Big bags are trendy and highly functional, which is what New York fashion is all about.

Dressing in the office
Maybe it's because many of us are heading back to the office, or maybe it's because we're taking inspiration from the "business casual in disco" trend of the early 2000s. Either way, the suit-and-tie look has increased. I'm already thinking about stealing one of my dad's ties.

Second-skin boots
I'm not ready to let go of my chunky boots yet, but stylish sock boots (mostly leather) are a new addition for fall. Personally, I love seeing them paired with a mid-length dress or skirt, almost as if they act as tights and shoes.

Puddle pants
Puddle pants can be a dangerous game to play on the streets of New York City, but what can I say? I like what I like. (The laid-back look adds a casual edge to New York fashion.

Elegant details
As a former edgy teenager (you can check out my old Tumblr page for proof), I am more than happy with this trend. I've never abandoned my heavy leather jackets and chunky boots, so I'll definitely be hopping on the nostalgia train this fall.
