Tips to keep in mind:

  • Playing with the color- Keep in mind that if your actual outfit is already very colorful then you must opt for a simple and neutral toned layer on top. Similarly, if your actual outfit is too dull then you can opt for a brighter layer on top by color blocking your look.

  • Play with different fabrics- A pleasant blend of texture is basic for layering. Be careful while picking up fabrics and do not go too overboard. Pick a couple of various texture surfaces/fabrics and weights and play around with them.

  • One Bulky item- The key is to keep the majority of the layers on the lighter side and mix in one significant piece, regardless of whether it's a bold sweater, a teddy coat or a significant bigger than regular shirt. It need not be your top layer either. Have fun styling!

BASIC FORM OF LAYERING

To layer a dress/ Jumpsuit/romper/coordinate set with an overall like a jacket, teddy coat, formal coat etc. of a contrasting color or a neutral shade.

STYLING THE SAME OUTFIT DIFFERENTLY

Add a punch to your boring pant suit set by wearing a sports bra or a bralette beneath and layering it with an oversized trench coat/formal coat/teddy coat etc. Make sure that in this case the inner garment is contrasting, and the layered garment is complimenting the color of the outfit.

You can style the same outfit differently by adding a punch of a very bright color like blue, pink, orange etc. Wearing a cute Tshirt/Sweater/Pullover/hoodie under it would serve as a statement piece for the outfit.

STYLING A SIMPLE DRESS EFFORTLESSLY

You can style any basic dress from your wardrobe by layering it with another dress which is either shorter in length or longer (if transparent). A full sleeve dress can be layered with a half sleeve or a sleeveless dress on top and a half sleeve dress can be layered with a sleeveless dress on top. Make sure that the colors of both your dresses are conflicting with one another and style your look with a cute pair of statement bag.

There are numerous ways of layering a dress but my most favorite of all would be layering a dress with a jacket or a formal coat. Try to pick similar toned dress and jacket. Make sure that if the top layer (jacket, coat etc.) is solid/ simple then the dress should be having some sort of a texture/pattern and vice versa. In this case you can have two statement pieces- Your dress or the top layer and a statement bag/shoes/jewelry.

STYLING AN OVER SIZED SHIRT

You can easily wear your formal shirt or any oversized shirt of any color over a cute dress to make it look chic and stylish. The shirt should preferably be of neutral shades so that it complements the look in a more subtle manner. The shirt can be tied into a knot or just simply left opened. In this case the accessories should serve as a statement piece and not the shirt.

Another way of styling a shirt is to simply wear it on top of a spaghetti or a plane t shirt with your favorite pair of jeans or shorts. It looks very cool and is a perfect day look to carry. You can pair the outfit with comfy bright colored shoes or strappy heels.

LAYERING PANT SUIT

Making a pantsuit look interesting can be a tough task but not impossible. Pant suits look amazing in all the seasons but especially in the winters. A nice neutral or a bright colored pullover worn inside and a similar tone long coat or a trench coat worn outside can create a lot of impact on your look and also add a structure to your body. Wear this look with strappy heels or pencil heels to look taller.
